What we do.

 Woodspring Rams was started by Yannick and Nikita Underwood, on 100% rented pasture based in North Somerset. Producing pedigree Charollais and Hampshire downs for commercial and pedigree use, aswell as our own composite breeds. All rams we produce are fit and active with the ability to serve ewes on the harshest of environments. The flock is very closely managed and recorded with particular focus on lameness, fertility, growth, conformation and body condition. 

Rams are reared and outwintered on grass, allowing us to select rams that maintain condition and grow well from a forage diet. This also allows them to grow naturally without being pushed with concentrates and will continue to grow on, last and thrive after purchase.

 Ewes are also on a grass based system, mostly consisting of old permanent pasture and orchards. They are only housed during lambing for ease of management so that records on lambing ease, birth weigh and lambing vigour can be reported on every lamb. Ewes and lambs are returned to pasture 3 days after lambing. Growth rates are recorded at 8 and 12 weeks. Our selection process is very strict and anything that has caused any trouble such as lameness or difficult lambing etc will be marked for culling. Lambs are then selected for shape and correctness at finished weight and none are retained for sale if they are not finished at 40kg by a maximum of 12 week old. Lambs will then be weaned and split into groups. We generally will then have another good selection on our rams in the autumn including a breeding soundness exam, where any substandard rams will be removed ahead of the winter. A final check before sale season will ensure all rams can be sold with a guarantee on fertility and an assurance that they can work and thrive once sold.
